"One must have chaos in oneself in order to give birth to a dancing star" (Nietzsche)

The Complete David Wells...So Far

David Wells is an astrologer, ghost hunter, writer, inspirer and seeker after Qabala. He’s also a thoughtful and thought-provoking person. This man doesn’t skim the surface of life; he steps into his diving suit, straps on an oxygen tank and dives right into the full experience.

When you first visit David Wells’ website you can’t miss his straightforward and open approach. You could conclude that this arises from his normal upbringing north of the border; but if you search a little deeper you’ll see that this is a reflection of the clear and simple commitment to a Spiritual life that does much to enhance his existence.

Through study and learning, flexibility of thought and a willingness to embrace change, his work demonstrates the inner calm, strength and certainty that guide his life, things he wants to encourage in anyone ready to find their own path.

When I first came across one of David’s books, The Complete Guide to Psychic Development, I groaned. How many books like that had I read? Thirty seconds later I almost knocked over my coffee cup because I couldn’t tear myself away from the page long enough to properly locate my drink.

The man can write. More than that, he can communicate information clearly and efficiently without sounding patronising; he has a great sense of humour which he uses
appropriately.

The book covers the main areas of psychic development, imparting a great deal of key information in very few words and showing how the various areas of psychic work can be used together to present a more holistic view. For the first time I saw how a psychic reading, tarot, numerology and astrology could be used together to bring about a multi-level understanding of our individual lives.

What about the man himself, though? What motivates him? How did he find his way to where he is now?

Born and raised in Scotland, he had a normal childhood devoid of mystical experience. Son of a coalminer and a mother who worked in a knitwear factory, he joined the Royal Navy at the age of sixteen and spent eight years in this demanding profession. From there he returned to college as a mature student to study leisure, going on to work as a caterer in a small hotel in the South of England.

His transition onto his Spiritual pathway is in line with his down-to-earth attitude – no choir of angels for David. He was in hospital with pneumonia when he found himself walking along a corridor to be confronted by an elderly lady who told him to go back to bed. He was about to do as he was told when he woke up to find he was already there. That experience led to a lifetime of study and the beginning of an extraordinary career.

That’s all you’ll find about David on his website, because he doesn’t dwell on himself; his commitment is to you, your path and your Spiritual adventure. However, shortly after he began his journey of Spiritual discovery he found the Qabala, and it’s here you must start if you want to understand the man.

The Qabala is one of the oldest forms of Spiritual wisdom, and it’s believed that the teachings contain long-hidden secrets of the universe as well as keys to the mysteries of our inner lives. It sets out to explain the complexities of the material and non-material universes and the physical and metaphysical natures of humanity. Believers feel that success in following the Qabala will help humanity remove chaos, pain and suffering. Human beings are born with the potential for greatness and Qabala is a means for activating that potential. This is the basis of everything David does and he finds the knowledge invaluable in his own life and as part of his work. He sees it as a solid foundation which he tries to share through his teaching.

For many people considering following the psychic or Spiritual path, the first challenge is to blend a normal upbringing with an awakening sense of something undefined, some Spiritual thing that has never crossed one’s radar before. David admits that he found this difficult at times, but the excitement of the journey coupled with constant new discoveries offered him proof that the life changes were worthwhile. However, he cautions that: “as you progress you get less proof and more faith.”

For David a hobby became a passion, became a working life full of blessings and magic moments. Initially, he didn’t find it easy to create the time for psychic and Spiritual development; the needs of reality, at times, outweighed the needs of the soul. However, he found that the more time he committed to his inner development, the greater the compensations, and he felt a better balance and understanding of the everyday world.

Even though he feels blessed in his work, he doesn’t feel chosen by the Spirit world. Life is about choices and he believes that, when he was offered a new way, he chose to take it because his soul remembered his life plan and took over his inner guidance. His work is a commitment he made which he continues to develop.

Like everyone in this field, he had to learn to hear his guides and work out a comfortable way to communicate with them. When in doubt he stops, takes a deep breath, then asks for help; then he takes action, doing his best to make things happen. Whenever communicating with David, it’s evident that the personal commitment he has to his work is always followed up by action, thoughts only having so much value.

It took him about ten years to find his way to where he is now, but the journey still continues and it would be wrong to say that he’s at the end of his voyage of discovery, or that he wants that voyage to end. Progression and development are key words to him; it isn’t just something he teaches to others. It may comfort the seeker to know that on this journey he found himself: “confused at points, as well as angry, delighted, ecstatic and grumpy!”

David is also an astrologer. He believes that understanding your birth chart and looking at regular updates can keep you on the straight and narrow, pulling you up when necessary, and guiding you towards the right things for you. He doesn’t worry about not knowing what the future holds and prefers to concentrate on what he wants to do today.

His most famous foray into the world of television was as part of the Most Haunted team. The programme focuses on mediumship and attaches that label to the psychics who appear on it; whereas David’s personal journey was never about mediumship. Although he was grateful for the opportunity to appear on television, he found the work to be a drain on his time and creativity. Eventually he found himself lacking the energy to do any future planning so he removed the television-imposed label and returned to the work he enjoys; he’s far too flexible to be labelled anything other than Work in Progress.

He believes that Spirituality is a personal choice that isn’t linked to poverty. As he says: “You can be as poor as a church mouse but does that make you more Spiritual than a billionaire? It’s about action not money. Money is an earthly energy and as long as we put back in when we can I think it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.” However, he doesn’t believe that the rich have been given the key to heaven: “It could be argued that the rich can do more – the Spiritual part comes from what they actually do rather than how much they earn.”

If someone wants to learn about or debate Spiritual matters that’s a positive thing, and David is here to help people to do that. It has bought him peace during the challenging times in his life because he has felt Spiritually supported. For him, Spirituality is an important part of life that helps him cope. It’s helped him come to terms with the cycle of life and death, and he copes with death by seeing the lessons it can teach. Part of this is focusing on the good memories of those he’s lost to the Spirit world, and to remember the positive impact they had on his life, particularly his own father.

He doesn’t believe you should let ego hold you back by being afraid of what others may think about your work; all you’ll do is compromise your own abilities. He quotes Dr Wayne Dwyer as saying that ego stands for Edging God Out and believes that ego can cause you to: “Miss the simple beauty and truths in life.”

He sees the beauty and truth himself because, as a believer in reincarnation, he’s more than happy to come here and live another life and would even have ‘See you again soon’ on his gravestone.

Through his writing and workshops, David seeks to encourage people to think about their lives and use their own Spirituality to help understand themselves more and to achieve what they want.

As a starting point he suggests switching off the television and not watching the news for at least a week, instead reading and taking long nature walks, meditating and writing down the thoughts that come to you. This way you’ll develop the questions for which you can seek your own personal answers. Develop a positive outlook and make sure you’ve a good attitude to life. When you focus on the wonders of life, more wonder comes your way.

David is just finishing his latest book, Real People, Real Past Lives. He’s also planning a trip to Australia to teach, and is in discussion with various television production companies about new ideas.

It’s a good job that after the Qabala his mainstay is chocolate because he’s going to need all the energy he can get to complete that list and, if I have any insight into his mind whatsoever, that’s only the tip of the iceberg. I hope so because he’s a fascinating man with a positive attitude and a lot to teach. I’ll be looking out for his next books and for anything else he does in the way of writing, teaching or entertainment.
